  14. I run a program that searchs for, and issues advisory cancels for,
  15. large binaries in the akr, biz, comp, misc, news, rec, and sci
  16. hierachies.
  17.  
  18. I have issued 5 cancels for large binary files (average size 269,926
  19. characters - total size 1,349,630 characters) posted to 5 different
  20. unmoderated discussion groups in the comp and rec hierarchies as
  21. follows:
  22.    1 rec.music.gdead
  23.    1 rec.arts.theatre.plays
  24.    1 comp.os.ms-windows.programmer.win32
  25.    1 comp.fonts
  26.    1 comp.dcom.modems
  27.  
  28. This pointer is being posted to each affected group listed above.

  30. If you want to see exactly which file was deleted from a particular
  31. group, or the criteria that I used to select it, read the full report
  32. in news.admin.net-abuse.announce.  Look for AR157 as in the
  33. subject of this pointer.  The full report can also be found in
  34. alt.nocem.misc and alt.retromod.

  36. There has been a long-standing consensus among news administrators that
  37. binaries belong in binaries newsgroups, and not elsewhere.  There also
  38. seems to be a consensus supporting the cancellation of large binaries in
  39. discussion groups as long as appropriate protocols are followed.

  41. In my opinion, the best way to distribute binary files is via ftp or
  42. the web.  With the ready availablity of ftpmail servers, even uucp
  43. sites can retrieve binaries from ftp sites.
  44.  
  45. However, if you really must post a binary to Usenet, please post it to
  46. an appropriate binaries newsgroup such as alt.binaries.misc.  Then, if
  47. you like, post something in the appropriate discussion group telling
  48. people where to find the binary in the binaries group (a pointer to
  49. the binary).  This will permit news administrators and users to decide
  50. for themselves whether to receive the binary files.
